As of May 2023 you will only be able to fly domestically using enhanced identification. Read on to understand the requirements and learn some helpful tips on what you need to prepare for the coming changes.
You have decided on your travel destination, had a travel advisor plan and book everything, you are fully packed and it is time to head to the airport. It is about this time that you realize that TSA has started implementing the 2005 REAL-ID Act. In short, this means that beginning May 2023, all adults 18 and older will need to bring a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or acquire another acceptable form of identification in order to fly within the United States.
Under the Act, federal agencies, including the TSA, are barred from accepting state-issued driver’s licenses or identification cards that do not meet the established minimum security standards. Beyond the airport this also applies to certain federal facilities.
The good news is that you may already have what you need; any one of these will work just as well:
Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
U.S. Military ID
U.S. Passport
U.S. Passport Card
Foreign Passport
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
Enhanced Driver License (EDL)
Enhanced Identification Card (EID)
Global Entry Card
My personal recommendation is to apply for Global Entry. Not only does it meet the new standard for domestic flights, if you fly internationally you will be amazed how quickly you get through Customs and Immigration. Plus the card is the same size as a Driver’s License so easily fits in your wallet. Here are some of the other benefits:
TSA Precheck
No airport processing lines
No airport paperwork
Access to expedited entry benefits in other countries
Available at major U.S. airports
Reduced wait times
Don’t wait to apply for either a REAL ID or Global Entry, the process isn’t pleasant, but is necessary and will not improve as the date looms closer and closer.
